Milarepa
Milarepa (c. 1052–1135) is one of Tibet's most respected yogis, poets, and saints, known for his incredible journey from a dark past into enlightenment. At first, he was consumed by the desire for revenge and learned black magic in order to take revenge on his family; he later repented and sought the great teacher Marpa. Milarepa endured fierce and often very harsh training for many years under the terrible tyranny of Marpa until finally succeeding in acquiring such high spiritual insight and control. He became renowned as an extemporaneous composer of wise songs through which he taught Buddhist subject matter in verse, rendering it cogent or poignant. His life is an inspiring example of total transformation, absolute devotion, and what every human being can achieve in becoming enlightened through perseverance; thus, he is a key figure in Tibetan Buddhism.
