Buddhist Stupa
In Tibetan Buddhism, a stupa—also known as a chorten—is a sacred structure that enshrines relics, scriptures, or sacred objects, symbolizing the enlightened mind of the Buddha. These monuments serve as powerful sources of spiritual merit, meditation, and protection, with their architectural design representing the path to enlightenment. One of the most revered stupas is the Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal, believed to have been built by a pious woman named Jadzima as an offering to the Buddha. According to legend, when King Trisong Detsen sought Padmasambhava’s help spreading Buddhism in Tibet, the great master instructed him to build stupas to subdue negative energies. This led to the construction of numerous chortens across the Himalayas, reinforcing their role as beacons of wisdom and compassion. Today, circumambulating a stupa while reciting prayers is a common practice, believed to purify karma and bring spiritual blessings.
