Vajrasattva

Vajrasattva is widely revered as the second patriarch in the Shingon Buddhist lineage, following Vairocana Buddha as the first. According to Kukai’s account in the Record of the Dharma Transmission, it is believed that the great master Nagarjuna encountered Vajrasattva in a mystical iron tower located in southern India—an event based on the testimony of the esoteric teacher Amoghavajra. As described in the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasattva initiated Nagarjuna through the abhiseka (esoteric empowerment) ceremony, conferring upon him the secret teachings originally received from Vairocana Buddha. While Kukai acknowledges Vajrasattva’s vital role in transmitting Vajrayana Buddhism, he provides little detail regarding the origins or background of this powerful deity of purification and wisdom.
